BDSM being a power exchange first and foremost it takes establishing roles to start a scene, and for many dominance over a submissive is fully felt when pinned down in some way, shape or form…Bondage.
Bondage is found through out media, childhood play, art, and history. There is something so sexually stimulating about seeing the sculpt and curvature of the human form pushed to new limits.
As a top:
Bondage, personally, makes me feel like a spider and a fly. I find great delight in telling the slave just how stuck they are, and how I can, and will have my way with them, and they won’t get away
As a submissive:
Loss of the ability to move or control your own body is enough to establish who is on top and who is on bottom with most submissives, but some bondage slaves are tricky bastards. They like to test and push their dominants. These, often referred to as “smart-assed subs” or “smart-assed-masochists” (SAS or SAM), are usually the type to try to wriggle, writhe and squirm out of any type of bondage you put them in. Some won’t try to test your bondage, and others won’t give up trying. Depends on the dominant/submissive relationship, and your previous negotiations of consent as to whether you will put up with the later. Personally, I highly respect the gift of submission, and a smart ass is more likely to be put in time-out, unless I was in the mood to have a power struggle when we started to play. The “SAS/SAM” is usually the same type that intentionally tries to piss off a top to provoke them to slap them, or otherwise punish them…the worst thing you could do to that type is ignore them, they thrive on punishment, and pushing a tops buttons.
Safety First: Before you even consider bondage, what types you want to play with, who you want to play with, and what role you want to play…both tops and bottoms should have safety first in mind. Be prepared to cut any form of restraint in an emergency. Keep “bandage” scissors present, easily located. Never bind someone in a way that could strangle him or her if his or her weight went dead. Never leave a bound submissive unattended. Be clear on your play partner’s medical history (diabetics and people with other circulatory irregularities should be particularly paid close attention to when in bondage).
There are so many different types of bondage. I couldn’t possibly go into them all but the most common are leather, ropes and mental bondage.
Leather: The scent, look and feel of leather is enough for some subs to start to hit subspace. It is rather expensive, but easy for the most inexperienced player to use. It does require proper care. Leather should regularly be cleaned and conditioned.
Rope: Though this is one of the least expensive and readily accessible methods of bondage, it should usually be done by a more experienced top. There are some simple hitches and knots for the “average Joe”, but the wrong type of rope can cause nerve damage. The wrong thickness and tension can cause circulatory problems. And even the right rope used incorrectly can be very dangerous. Once you get used to ropes you may find that your ropes get more and more intricate in design, and tops should be familiar with the body, safety, their sub’s health, and their environment to conduct a safe session.
Mummification: Plastic wrap mummification is one of the most simple and inexpensive methods of bondage (though there are many other forms of mummification). Being positioned on the back is one of the safest positions, and when a person is mummified lying down, the possibilities are endless. It is difficult to make plastic wrap too tight. Wrapping from the shoulders to the ankles is simple for the most novice of dominants. The one thing that one has to look out for is balance. A sub whose legs are bound too close together often needs support, and when moving a mummified submissive you must be sure to support them, and guide them. With out use of the arms, a submissive trying to re-position them can easily stumble about and hit their head, or take a serious fall. You can also cut open holes in the plastic wrap to access the part of the body you want to play with. Cutting around the breast, they tend to burst through the plastic.
Mental: Mental bondage isn’t enough for many bondage enthusiasts. It is more for the submissive who is into subjugating themselves for a dominants approval, than for a bottom. A submissive in mental bondage maintains a prescribed position, often suffering consequences for any deviation.
Wrestling pins: There are a great many people that like to be over powered physically. A submissive that has been knocked to the ground, and pinned, often with a scissor hold between their Mistress or Masters thighs is often in ecstasy. Not all submissives go for this type of restraint; some prefer a more poised and regal dominant, than the capture of a slave by an Amazon Goddess. These types of restraint can be best delivered by a dominant that has some knowledge of martial arts or wrestling previously. It has nothing to do with size and stature if the dominant knows the right techniques. Because of this, fantasy wrestling is more often role-play…most people aren’t knowledgeable about wrestling and martial arts, but a good tough and tumble, and allowing your top to claim you can be just as fun for most.
Predicament Bondage: It is fun to add an added element of torment to bondage through predicaments. When you place a submissive in bondage (even mental bondage, ex: catholic school discipline of maintaining a position kneeling on rice and holding up dictionaries) and place a strain to keep a position (be it on their toes, or the tension of a pull on their nipple clamps, labia, genitals or any other sensitive focal point of your attention) and force them to stay still or suffer the added torment that you have made this is called a predicament. If the sub doesn’t hold still they force themselves to suffer. If flogging or torturing a sub in this situation they must make a firm will to not move in a way that will further cause them pain.
A great way to start turning your lover on to bondage is to start using sexy lingerie…not just by wearing it, but using your panties as a way to obscure their site, gag them with your underwear after teasing them with them. Take silk stockings, tease them as you take them off, push your lover back and trail the loose stocking along their skin, teasing with the texture, till you have them where you can use the stockings to tie them down. Silk scarves are also another great seductive introduction to bondage. These are not all you can do. Other such ideas to think about are licorice ropes, or candy whips of some sort. These can be fun to eat your way out of later.
In learning more about bondage safety is most important. Local groups often offer Seminars on such subjects. There are many great books to help learn more about how to do it, such as Jay Wiseman’s Erotic Bondage Handbook, and Midori’s The Seductive Art of Japanese Bondage, and most books on the basics of BDSM offer more than enough information to give you a solid start in bondage play…but bondage and dominance starts first in the mind, take it slow, sexy and safely. Don’t rush in and try to start playing beyond your knowledge and experience. A great bondage scene starts in the head of the submissive and dominant, and a safe scene is more important than being fancy with rope.
